Octopuses have three hearts. They have one main heart which is called the systemic heart. The two smaller hearts are located near their gills. The two smaller hearts perform the same task as the right side of the human heart would. These two hearts pump blood to the gills where it dumps waste and obtains oxygen. Then the hearts pump the oxygen-rich blood back to the main heart. The main heart can then pump the fresh blood throughout the rest of the octopus’s body. Also, octopuses have a close circulatory system. This means that oxygen and nutrients are delivered to different parts of the animal through vessels.
